The Diocese was established on 17 October 1986 by Pope John Paul II, from territory previously part of the Diocese of Nachingwea. Initially under the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, it later became part of the ecclesiastical province of Songea. Since its foundation, the Diocese has expanded its pastoral, educational, and missionary presence across southern Tanzania
Evangelization is central to the Diocese’s mission. With its vast territory and widely scattered population, the Diocese focuses on both parish ministry and outreach to rural villages and remote mission areas. Over the years, the Catholic population has grown steadily, reflecting ongoing efforts to share the Gospel and engage communities in faith formation.
The Diocese also pursues holistic evangelization, integrating spiritual, educational, and social initiatives. Alongside preaching and sacramental life, programs include catechumen formation, youth engagement, and lay leadership development. Health, education, and community development services accompany these efforts, strengthening the Church’s presence and impact.
Local communities are encouraged to take an active role in evangelization. Lay leaders, catechists, and youth groups help spread the Gospel in their neighborhoods, making evangelization both personal and community-driven.
