Diocese of Musoma

About the Diocese

Diocese history

Before its establishment as a diocese, Musoma was under the Apostolic Vicariate of Mwanza. The creation of the Diocese of Musoma in 1957 aimed to provide more focused pastoral attention to local communities and support the growth of the Catholic faith. Bishop John James Rudin became the first bishop and laid the groundwork for the diocese’s development.

History of Evangelization

Catholic mission work in the Musoma area began in the late 19th century when the White Fathers (Missionaries of Africa) arrived to introduce the Christian faith. The first local baptisms took place in 1911, marking the start of a steadily growing Catholic community.

Over the following decades, missionaries established schools, healthcare facilities, and mission stations to serve both spiritual and social needs. In 1946, the Apostolic Vicariate of Musoma-Maswa was created, which later became an Apostolic Prefecture in 1950. The diocese was officially established on July 5, 1957, and continued to grow in scope and influence.

In 2010, part of Musoma’s territory was separated to form the Diocese of Bunda, allowing for more focused pastoral care in both regions. Today, the Diocese of Musoma maintains its strong commitment to evangelization while also supporting education, healthcare, and social programs. Under current leadership, the diocese is particularly active in addressing community challenges, such as promoting education for girls and combating social issues like sexual violence.
