The Diocese of Mbinga was established on 22 December 1986, when it was carved out from the Diocese of Songea. Its first bishop, Emmanuel Alex Mapunda, guided the Diocese through its formative years, laying strong foundations for growth in both faith and community development. Since then, the Diocese has continued to expand its reach and deepen its commitment to evangelization and service
Evangelization lies at the heart of the Diocese’s mission. From its earliest days, the Diocese has focused not only on proclaiming the Gospel but also on serving the community through practical programs. Mission centers and parish communities have been established to reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that the message of Christ touches every part of the Diocese.
The Diocese emphasizes forming local clergy, religious, and lay leaders to carry forward its mission. Small Christian Communities, catechesis programs, and youth groups are vibrant and active, enabling the faithful to live out their faith in daily life.
Evangelization is also expressed through social development. The Diocese engages in initiatives such as clean-water projects, education programs, and healthcare services. These efforts demonstrate that living the Gospel is about caring for the whole person, combining faith with concrete action in the community.
Bishop John Chrisostom Ndimbo (2011 – Present) – The current bishop, continuing to strengthen the spiritual and social mission of the Diocese.
