Diocese of Mahenge

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The Diocese of Mahenge was officially established in 1964, growing out of the larger Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. From its beginnings, the diocese has focused on spreading the Gospel and building strong, faith filled communities. Over the years, it has evolved to meet the spiritual and social needs of the people, creating new opportunities for pastoral care and community development.

History of Evangelization

Evangelisation in Mahenge is at the heart of the diocese’s mission. Through the establishment of small Christian communities, outreach programs, and catechetical initiatives, the diocese brings the message of Christ to every corner of its territory, including remote villages and mountainous regions. Priests, religious sisters and brothers, and lay leaders work side by side to ensure that the Gospel touches the lives of all.

Beyond preaching, the diocese actively supports social development projects. These include schools, health centers, vocational training programs, and water supply initiatives, all aimed at improving the quality of life for local communities. By combining faith with service, the Diocese of Mahenge demonstrates that evangelisation is not just about words but also about concrete action in service to humanity.

The diocese continues to encourage active participation from its laity, strengthen youth programs, and expand catechesis, ensuring that the faith is deeply rooted in daily life while nurturing a generation committed to living the Gospel.
