The Diocese of Same is located in the northeastern part of Tanzania, south of Mount Kilimanjaro, and encompasses the Same and Mwanga Districts. It is bordered by the Pare Mountains to the west and the Maasai plains to the east, covering an area of approximately 10,800 square kilometers. As of 2004, the diocese had about 70,490 Catholics, representing 12.5% of the total population of 562,950.
The evangelization of the Same region began in the late 19th century, primarily through the efforts of the Holy Ghost Fathers (Spiritans). Missionaries established missions among the Pare people in the mountainous areas and the Maasai in the plains. The establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture in 1963 formalized the Catholic presence, leading to the construction of churches, schools, and health facilities, and fostering a growing Catholic community
