Diocese of Sumbawanga

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The Diocese of Sumbawanga has its origins in the early missionary work of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), who arrived in the region in the late 19th century. Their dedication to spreading the Gospel laid a strong foundation for the growth of the Church in Rukwa. Over time, the mission evolved through several stages — from the Apostolic Vicariate of Tanganyika to the Diocese of Karema — until it was officially renamed the Diocese of Sumbawanga on 24th October 1969. Since then, the diocese has continued to grow in faith and structure, guided by devoted shepherds and the prayers of the faithful.

History of Evangelization

Evangelization in the Diocese of Sumbawanga began with the tireless efforts of the early missionaries, who travelled great distances on foot and by boat to bring the message of Christ to remote communities. They established the first mission stations, schools, and health centres, combining the preaching of the Gospel with acts of love and service. Their dedication inspired many local men and women to embrace the Christian faith and later to take up leadership roles within the Church.

As the diocese matured, local clergy gradually assumed responsibility for pastoral care, strengthening the sense of ownership and identity among the faithful. Parishes multiplied, and the focus of evangelization expanded beyond preaching to include education, healthcare, social development, and the formation of lay leaders. The Church became a beacon of hope, advocating for both spiritual and human development in the region.

Today, evangelization in Sumbawanga continues to thrive through vibrant parish life, youth movements, catechetical programs, and active participation of lay faithful. The diocese embraces modern means of communication and encourages collaboration among priests, religious, and laity. Rooted in the joy of the Gospel, the Church in Sumbawanga remains committed to transforming lives through faith, education, and service to the community.
