The Catholic Diocese of Bukoba was established on 21 June 1960, following the earlier creation of the Diocese of Rutabo (1953) and the Apostolic Vicariate of Lower Kagera (1951). The roots of the diocese date back to 1892, when the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) began evangelizing in the Bukoba area.
The evangelization of Bukoba began in 1892, when the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) arrived in the Kagera Region to spread the Gospel of Christ. They established the first mission stations at Kashozi and Muleba, where they introduced Christian teaching, built schools, and provided medical care. Through their dedication and witness, the Catholic faith took deep root among the local people.
As the Christian community expanded, the Holy See established the Apostolic Vicariate of Lower Kagera on 13 December 1951, appointing Laurean Rugambwa as its first Vicar Apostolic. The rapid growth of the Church led to its elevation to the Diocese of Rutabo on 25 March 1953, and later, on 21 June 1960, to the Diocese of Bukoba. Under the guidance of Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, the first native African Cardinal, the diocese strengthened its structures, trained local clergy, and deepened its mission outreach.
Over the decades, the Diocese of Bukoba has continued to flourish in both faith and service. It has established numerous parishes, schools, hospitals, and social centers, serving both spiritual and material needs. The clergy, religious, and laity work hand in hand to promote evangelization, education, and human development in the region.
Today, the Diocese of Bukoba stands as a beacon of faith and unity in the Kagera Region, steadfast in its mission to proclaim the Gospel and build a community rooted in love, justice, and service to God and neighbor.
