Archdiocese of Dodoma

About The Archdiocese

Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam is located in Tanzania, covering the city of Dar es Salaam and parts of the Pwani region. It spans roughly 39,849 km² and serves around 1.8 million Catholics within a total population of approximately 9.5 million. The Archdiocese provides pastoral care, education, and social services across urban and coastal communities.

Archdiocese history

The Archdiocese traces its origins to 1897, when Pope Leo XIII established it as the Apostolic Prefecture of Southern Zanguebar. It was promoted to an Apostolic Vicariate, renamed the Vicariate of Dar‑es‑Salaam, and ultimately elevated to a Metropolitan Archdiocese in 1953 by Pope Pius XII. Over time, it has grown in parishes, missions, and local leadership while contributing to the spread of the Catholic faith in Tanzania.

History of Evangelization in the Diocese

From its early missionary days, the Archdiocese has focused on spreading the Gospel throughout both urban and rural areas. It began with coastal missions and gradually expanded its network of parishes and mission stations. Early leaders laid the groundwork for community engagement and local faith formation.

In modern times, evangelization emphasizes active participation by the laity through small Christian communities and associations for men, women, and youth. These groups play a key role in faith formation, social action, and outreach, helping the Church reach thousands of families across the Archdiocese.

Evangelization is integrated with social development, with the Archdiocese running schools, health facilities, vocational training, and media initiatives. This approach ensures that spreading the faith also addresses the spiritual and material needs of the people.
