Diocese of Tanga

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The Diocese of Tanga traces its roots to missionary activity in the late 19th century, when early Catholic mission centers were established in the region. On April 18, 1950, the Apostolic Prefecture of Tanga was created from the Apostolic Vicariate of Kilimanjaro, and later elevated to a full diocese on February 24, 1958, under the leadership of its first bishop, Reverend Eugène Cornelius Arthurs, I.C. Since then, the diocese has grown into a vibrant Catholic community committed to faith, education, and social development.

History of Evangelization

Evangelization has been at the heart of Tanga’s Catholic mission since its founding. Early missionary orders, including the Trappists and Rosminians, laid the groundwork for spreading the Gospel through schools, churches, and community programs across the region. These early efforts not only shared the Catholic faith but also provided essential education and social services to local communities.

Over the years, the Diocese has strengthened its outreach through the formation of catechists, who play a key role in teaching the faith and supporting parish life. Specialized programs and training centers, such as the catechist college at Mlingano parish, have equipped local leaders with spiritual and academic formation, helping the Church grow from within.

Today, evangelization continues through the creation of new parishes, outreach to remote communities, and the use of modern media to engage people of all ages. The Diocese remains committed to nurturing faith, supporting families, and spreading the message of hope throughout the Tanga region.
