Diocese of Ifakara

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The Diocese of Ifakara was officially established in January 2012, carved out from the Diocese of Mahenge to meet the pastoral needs of the area more effectively. Since its creation, the diocese has become an important center for spiritual guidance, community development, and the promotion of the Catholic faith in the region. Bishop Saluaris Melchior Libena was appointed as its first bishop and continues to shepherd the community with dedication and vision.

History of Evangelization

Evangelization lies at the heart of the Diocese of Ifakara’s mission. From its inception, the diocese has focused on nurturing faith within communities while reaching out to those who are yet to encounter the Gospel. Priests, religious sisters, and lay leaders are actively trained to guide and support parishioners, ensuring that the teachings of Christ touch every corner of the diocese.

The diocese also emphasizes catechesis and faith formation, encouraging both children and adults to deepen their understanding of the sacraments and the Catholic tradition. Regular workshops, retreats, and community gatherings help strengthen spiritual life and foster a sense of unity among parishioners.

Serving a largely rural population, the diocese faces unique challenges in reaching remote communities. Despite this, it has developed creative approaches to pastoral care, relying on small Christian communities, local catechists, and outreach programs. Schools, healthcare centers, and social initiatives further reinforce the diocese’s commitment to sharing the Gospel through service, embodying faith in action across the region.
