Diocese of Kigoma

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The Catholic Church in Kigoma traces its roots back to the early missionary work of the White Fathers (Missions Africaines) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the pioneering figures, Bishop Jan Cornelius van Sambeek, dedicated himself to learning local languages and traditions, ensuring that the message of the Gospel could be understood and embraced by the local communities. The region was first established as an Apostolic Vicariate in 1946 and later elevated to the status of a diocese in 1953, laying the foundation for the vibrant Catholic community that exists today.

History of Evangelization

Evangelization in Kigoma has always been a holistic mission, combining spiritual outreach with practical support for local communities. In the early years, missionaries traveled great distances—often on foot or by boat—to reach remote villages, bringing the sacraments, religious instruction, and support for education and healthcare. This hands-on approach fostered a strong sense of community and laid the groundwork for the growth of Catholic life in the region.

Today, the Diocese continues to focus on Small Christian Communities (SCCs), where local groups gather for prayer, reflection, and mutual support. These communities help Catholics live their faith in practical ways and strengthen the bonds between members.

The Diocese also plays a vital role in supporting refugees and displaced populations from neighboring countries. Through pastoral care, education, and social services, the Church works to provide hope, stability, and a sense of belonging for all who come to Kigoma. Evangelization here is not only about spreading the faith but also about living it through service, solidarity, and community engagement.
