The Diocese of Mtwara was officially established in 1972, evolving from earlier church structures in the region. Since its creation, it has grown steadily, spreading the message of the Gospel and providing pastoral care to countless communities along the coast and inland areas
Evangelization is at the heart of the Diocese’s mission. It seeks to reach people in every corner of Mtwara, from bustling towns to remote villages, offering not only spiritual guidance but also support for education, health, and social well-being. The Diocese places strong emphasis on forming vibrant local faith communities, where believers can grow in their relationship with God and support one another in daily life.
A key part of this mission is the development of Small Christian Communities. These gatherings provide spaces for prayer, reflection on Scripture, and practical support among neighbors, helping the Gospel become a lived reality in people’s homes and workplaces.
In addition, the Diocese actively integrates evangelization with social outreach, supporting schools, health centers, and community programs. This holistic approach ensures that spiritual growth goes hand in hand with tangible improvements in the lives of the people it serves.
