About The Archdiocese

Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Songea is located in the scenic southwestern highlands of Tanzania, with its center in the city of Songea. Covering approximately 38,600 km², we are blessed to serve a diverse community of over 655,000 people, with more than half identifying as Catholic. Our mission is to walk with people in their faith journey, nurturing hope, love, and service across our communities

Archdiocese history

The Catholic Church in Songea began over a century ago when early missionaries arrived, bringing the Gospel and a spirit of service to the local people. From humble beginnings as mission stations, the Church grew into the Diocese of Songea in 1969 and was later elevated to an archdiocese in 1987. Over the decades, the Archdiocese has become a center of faith and community, rooted in Christ and committed to serving all

History of Evangelization in the Diocese

Evangelization in Songea is a holistic mission that embraces both faith and action. From the very start, missionaries focused on spiritual guidance alongside education, healthcare, and social development. Schools, hospitals, and community programs were established to help people grow not only in faith but also in knowledge, health, and dignity. Through these initiatives, the Church’s presence became tangible in the daily lives of the people.

The Church has always encouraged local communities to participate actively in its mission. Parishes and Christian groups are involved in building churches, leading catechism programs, and running social outreach projects. Laypeople, religious, and clergy work together to ensure that faith is lived out in everyday life. Evangelization here is about forming vibrant communities where worship, service, and personal growth are deeply connected.

In addition, the Archdiocese integrates social development into its evangelization. Programs that provide education, healthcare, and support for the vulnerable allow the message of the Gospel to be reflected in real-life action. By serving the community in practical ways, evangelization in Songea touches hearts, strengthens faith, and transforms lives, showing God’s love in every aspect of life.
