Diocese of Geita

About the Diocese

Diocese history

The diocese was established on November 8, 1984, carved out from the Diocese of Mwanza. The cathedral was built in 2010 and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace.

History of Evangelization

Catholic evangelization in Geita began under the Diocese of Mwanza. Missionaries worked to spread the Gospel, establish schools, and provide healthcare. Over time, the growing Catholic community led to the creation of the Diocese of Geita. Evangelization focused on both spiritual formation and social development, including education, healthcare, and community outreach. Missionary influence, especially by figures like Charles Cardinal Lavigerie, played a key role. Today, the diocese continues to expand through parish activities, catechesis, and service to the local population.

Episcopal Leadership

The current bishop is Rt. Rev. Flavian Matindi Kassala, appointed by Pope Francis on April 28, 2016. Born in 1967, he was ordained a priest in 1999 and previously served in education and seminary leadership roles before becoming bishop.
