The Diocese was officially established in 1980, building on Catholic mission work that began in the 19th century. Its first Bishop, Bernard Ngaviliau, guided the local Church through its early years, laying a strong foundation for growth, community service, and interfaith engagement.
Evangelization in Zanzibar focuses on living the Gospel through service and witness. With Christians forming a small minority, the Diocese emphasizes education, healthcare, and community programs as a way to share Christ’s love. Schools, clinics, and youth initiatives are central to its mission, helping transform lives while building strong, supportive communities.
Interfaith dialogue is also a cornerstone of the Diocese’s work. By fostering respect and cooperation with the Muslim majority, the Church promotes peace and harmony, demonstrating that faith can unite rather than divide. This approach allows the message of the Gospel to reach hearts through both action and witness.
